About WithoutCensorship

Somebody decides what you are allowed to say, read, and be tracked doing. This site exists to find out who, and how.

WithoutCensorship keeps coming back to one question from different angles: how do censorship, moderation rules, platform incentives, data collection and automated systems decide what gets seen, trusted, shared, or quietly dropped? Being angry about it is easy and does not get you very far. Describing it does. A system you can name and document is a system you can argue with.

Who runs this, and why

WithoutCensorship is edited by Pavel Kadlec, a Czech editor with a doctorate in philosophy.

He started the site at a point when algorithms, and now AI as well, quietly decide what people read, watch and believe. The aim was to build something that still makes sense in that setting: a place where people and their arguments come first, and where a text earns its place by being true and worth reading rather than by doing well in a feed.

Without censorship does not mean without editing. Not everything sent here gets published. Texts go through selection and checking, because speech that takes no responsibility for facts is just more noise. What matters is who decides, and how. Not a platform, not an advertiser, not an algorithm, but one editor who signs his name and answers for every word. Editorial choices, sourcing and corrections are his responsibility, and there is no committee to hide behind. If something here is wrong, unclear or missing, say so and it gets fixed with a visible note. How texts are chosen, and what never gets published, is written out in the Editorial Policy.

How this site works

Two kinds of text appear here. Some are written in house: analysis, practical guides, and commentary that is always labelled as opinion and never passed off as reporting. The rest is republished with permission from organisations whose work deserves a wider audience, among them the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Global Voices and EDRi. Republished pieces keep their original authors, are credited, and link back to the source. Their arguments stay as they were written.

Articles written here carry a Creative Commons licence (CC BY 4.0), so you may republish them, including commercially, as long as you credit the author and link back. AI tools are used for translation and for preparing texts. They do not decide what appears on the site, and nothing machine written is published here as reporting. How stories are chosen, how claims are checked and how mistakes get corrected is written out in full in the Editorial Policy. Terms for reusing the work are on the Republishing page, and journalists and contributors will find contacts and materials under For journalists.

What you will find here

Five sections carry the reporting: Investigations, Censorship, Digital Rights, Privacy and Guides. Questions too large for one article continue as Series, named collections that grow over time.

The guides are written step by step and meant to be used the same evening you read them. The glossary explains in plain language the terms that keep coming up in these debates, from shadowban to threat model. Each issue of the email brings five things worth knowing. Five short items, nothing else.

What this site does not do

No advertising and no affiliate links. No sponsored articles, no paid reviews, no paywall. There are no sponsors, no grants and no investors: hosting and software are paid for by the editor, which is also the honest reason the site is small and the guides arrive one at a time. No analytics either. The last analytics script was removed in July 2026, so nothing here counts you, profiles you or turns you into an audience segment. A few third-party requests remain, for fonts, author avatars and an anti-spam check on forms, and they are listed in the Privacy Policy.

And no algorithmic feed. What you see on the front page was put there by an editor, in an order a human chose, and you can take the whole site with you as an RSS feed and never come back to the homepage. That is deliberate.
