What a cookie actually is

A cookie is a small piece of text that a website asks your browser to keep and to send back on the next request. It is how a site remembers that you are logged in. The same simple mechanism, in other hands, is how an advertising network recognises you across thousands of unrelated sites — which is why the word has such a bad reputation.

Cookies that can appear on this site

  • mailpoet_page_view — set by the newsletter software running on our own server. It records that this browser has looked at a page, and it is used only for newsletter functions. It is not advertising and it is not shared with anyone.
  • wordpress_… and wp-settings-… — WordPress session and preference cookies. They appear only after somebody logs in to an account. A reader who never logs in never receives them.
  • comment_author_… — remembers the name, email and website you typed under a comment so that you do not have to type them again. Set only if you leave a comment.
  • A short-lived token from the Cloudflare spam check — created when you submit a form, so that the check does not have to run twice.

What this site does not set

  • No Google Analytics cookies, and no analytics cookies of any kind: since July 2026 the site has no analytics at all.
  • No advertising, retargeting or conversion cookies.
  • No Facebook, X, TikTok or LinkedIn pixels.
  • No cross-site identifiers and no fingerprinting scripts.

Things that can see you without any cookie

Cookies are not the only way a page leaks information. The fonts on this site are still delivered from Google’s servers and the form spam check comes from Cloudflare, so both companies see your IP address when a page loads. The small pictures next to comments come from Gravatar. This is written in the privacy policy as well, because in practice it matters more than most cookie banners do.

How to stay in control

Every browser can block or delete cookies, either everywhere or for a single site. If you block them here, the comment form will ask for your name each time and nothing else changes. If you block the font request too, the page is simply drawn in a different typeface. Browsers such as Firefox, Brave and Safari also separate cookies per site by default, which stops the cross-site tracking this site is not doing anyway.
